From the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier to Polliwog Park to the greenbelt parkway, artists across Manhattan Beach all have something they love about their city. On Friday, the city named the top three winners of the annual "I Heart MB" art contest at City Hall.
First place went to Irene White for a photo montage of Manhattan Beach titled "Walking Manhattan Beach." White said she was "thrilled" to win the award, which marked the first contest she had ever entered.
Second place went to Sue Ann Sinay for a pastel painting titled "Jogging Trail at Sunset." Third place was won by 12-year-old Cora Uchida, for her painting "Manhattan Beach Sunset."
The Why I Heart MB City Hall Exhibition showcases original artwork that depicts what people love about Manhattan Beach. These artists are all residents of Manhattan Beach, students of Manhattan Beach schools, or enrolled in a City of Manhattan Beach Parks and Recreation art class.
The winners were announced on Friday, February 24, at a reception where 100 spectators had gathered. All of the artwork is now on display at City Hall, and will remain up through March 16.
This year marks the fourth year of the annual contest, which was spearheaded by Councilmember Wayne Powell. Powell said that he was impressed with the diversity of entrants in this year's competition. "In the first year we started, we mostly had paintings, and many of the images were of the Manhattan Beach Pier. Now we have photography and other mixed media, and we're seeing scenes from all over Manhattan Beach," he said.
Powell, who has been a champion of the contest, terms out of the City Council this year. "I'm hoping my colleagues will carry on the tradition," he said.
