Since it first opened this spring, the ice cream shop Sugar Shack in North Manhattan has been growing its fan base and its menu offerings.

The ice cream, of course, is in high demand at the beach during this hot summer. Now, in addition to its creative ice cream presentations, the store will begin offering bagels and donuts on the weekends.

"And if locals or tourists want to try their ice cream in between some donuts or bagels - sure, why not?" said co-owner Marlon Rodriguez with a grin.

Sugar Shack is located at 3319 Highland Ave. in the space formerly held by Cake Bake Shop and  'Lette Macarons. According to Rodriguez, the space was long ago occupied by the local ice cream shop, so it is fitting that the shop is essentially returning to its roots. 

"We are a family owned business who saw a need for a local ice cream shop," said Rodriguez. "Being locals ourselves in search of ice cream as well, we knew there was a need to bring back an ice cream shop to this neighborhood."

Rodriguez said that the store has been "steadily gaining traction within the local community" since it opened its doors in March. He said that the flavors change regularly, but the shop keeps locals' favorites in stock - including Cookies 'n' Cream and Birthday Cake ice cream flavors, as well as mango and watermelon sorbets.

A promotion running for the month of July is a free Sugar Shack mason jar with a purchase of a float. Customers can create their own combinations or try the signature Nutella Stumptown Float, Mango Scarlet Float, or Watermelon Manguava Float.

The Sugar Shack logo mason jars come with a lid and eco-friendly reusable straw, so they can be taken home and reused - or brought back to Sugar Shack to fill it with a treat on another day.

The shop also offers Stumptown cold brew coffee, Scarlet hibiscus, and Manguava Kombucha.

Sugar Shack is open from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday; noon to 10:00 p.m. on Friday; and 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays (closed on Mondays).
