The Manhattan Beach Police Department is urging e-bike riders to lock their bikes and stay vigilant as the summer season approaches.

In the past week, three electric bike thefts were reported, according to MBPD in its weekly crime summary. At least one of those thefts involved an e-bike that was left unsecured.

And on Thursday, a witness called MBPD to report an e-bike theft in progress. The police were able to apprehend the suspect - and his burglary tools. (The bike was returned to its owner and the suspect earned a trip to the MBPD jail.)

The cost of an e-bike can be hefty. Most e-bikes start at around $800 and can go upwards of $8,000.

Police are asking residents to do the following:

  • Lock up your bike when it’s unattended.
  • Always use a high-quality lock. Metal U-locks are more difficult to defeat compared to cable locks.
  • Leave your bicycle in a well-lit and well traveled area.
  • Take a photo and document your bicycle’s serial number in case it is stolen.
Furthermore, if you witness someone cutting a bike chain, the police ask you not to attempt to intervene, but to call MBPD dispatch at 310-545-4566.
