Records are meant to be broken - and they were - at the 47th Annual Manhattan Beach 10K on Saturday, October 5.

For the second consecutive year, the race sold out – this time 5 days before – with 4,420 registered participants. It was the largest field in the history of the race.

But the biggest record fell on race day as Arturs Medveds of Walnut, CA won the men’s race in 29:20, a new course record by 41 seconds and the first to break 30 minutes. His pace of 4:44/mile gave him a more than two-minute win over Charles Parrish of Riverside, CA and Harvey Chilcott, of Santa Monica, CA.  Isaac Faynsod, a Mira Costa High School student and cross country runner was the first Manhattan Beach runner, finishing in 5th place.

On the women’s side, Abby Hong of Manhattan Beach, wearing the number one bib, repeated as champion in 34:48. Sierra Atkins from Walnut, CA came in 2nd with Linday Wandzilak from Manhattan Beach in 3rd.

Both Arturs and Abby received a check for $250 from 3 Leaf Realty for their win, and Arturs received a $1000 bonus for breaking the course record. With their win, they were also named the Road Runners Clubs of America Western Regional 10K Champions.

The oldest finishers were Richard Maynard (age 89) and Brenda Haky (age 85), both of Manhattan Beach.

Twenty-seven P.I.E.R runners (Participated In Every Race) completed the race. This elite group of runners, most of whom are in their 70s and 80s, have run the race every year since its inception.

Manhattan Beach Mayor Joe Franklin was the official starter for the race and the first person to both act as starter and still run the race.

Runners were treated to the sounds of five bands, and cheered by the Adventure Guides and two local girl scout troops. A good time was had by all at the post race expo with 27 vendors, including local companies like Sweety Ice Cream (Manhattan Beach owned), Positive Energy Physical Therapy and Ginger Up Juice.
