Manhattan Beach Hit-And-Run Suspect In Custody, Charged

Jan 13, 2025 02:56PM ● By Mb News Staff
The suspect in last week's fatal hit-and-run collision is now in custody and has been charged with three felonies, according to the Manhattan Beach Police Department.

Suspect Kameron Lee Peterson was taken into custody by the Manhattan Beach Police Department on January 9. On January 13, the Los Angeles County District Attorney filed three felony charges against Peterson: murder, hit-and-run causing death or serious injuries, and reckless driving.

The January 7 hit-and-run collision resulted in the death of Mira Costa High School senior Ford Savela.

(Manhattan Beach News was the first to report the apprehending of Peterson on January 11. Police confirmed that announcement on January 13.)

The car reportedly driven by Peterson was headed southbound on Sepulveda, according to a witness, where it crashed into a car containing Savela and two others near 3rd and Sepulveda.

The speeding car then circled around, hitting the fence across the street at the construction site at the former Goat Hill Plaza, according to the witness.

Peterson reportedly left the car and escaped the scene. A woman who had been in the speeding car remained on the scene.

Local teens and community members have been gathering at a now-growing memorial of flowers and notes for Savela on the grassy stretch in front of the Taco Bell at 3rd and Sepulveda. Mourners have added lights so that the memorial is illuminated at night.

The investigation is ongoing. MBPD is asking anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to email [email protected] or to contact Traffic Officer Beranek at 310-802-8097.
