Displaced Students Flock to Manhattan Beach Schools

Jan 31, 2025 08:36AM ● By Jeanne Fratello
Nearly 200 students who were displaced from the Los Angeles wildfires have joined Manhattan Beach public schools in the past three weeks, according to MBUSD.

While the numbers are changing daily, MBUSD reports that it has enrolled upwards of 170 students, with more than 120 enrolling at Mira Costa High School.

"It has been heartwarming to see Costa students welcoming our new families," Wysh Weinstein, the president of the MBUSD school board, told MB News. "Our counselors and staff have been working hard to ensure that students are placed into the best possible fit and adapting as needed. Teachers are working to support students and make sure they are caught up with the coursework and materials. Everyone should feel so proud to live in this community where we all jump up to help and welcome our new students and neighbors."

MBUSD, along with other local districts, have opened their doors to displaced students following the devastating wildfires. Information on how displaced students can enroll can be found here.

Large-Scale Welcome Gathering Planned

Meanwhile, a large-scale gathering to welcome new families is taking shape for this weekend in Manhattan Beach, with multiple local businesses contributing refreshments and resources.

The party, which was initially planned as a small gathering by Tiffany Barbara, Toni Knight, and friends, has since grown to more than 350 attendees who will gather at Knight's home.

"It started out with 10 of us wanting to do something for these displaced families," Barbara told MB News. "Toni and I both moved to Manhattan Beach from the Palisades and have friends that have been affected by the fires. We wanted to put together a gathering where these families can come and get info on local doctors, schools, hair salons, etc. Toni called upon her amazing mom friends to help us put this together. We were just going to make some heavy appetizers and bring a few bottles of wine each. Within 10 days, the RSVP list grew to more than 350 adults and kids. Thankfully, we had so many business reach out and donate for our event."

Contributors to the gathering include The Bottle Inn, Simmzy’s, Tin Roof, Zislis Group, Rock'N Fish, Two Guns, Johnny Rockets, Nick & Sons Gourmet Market, Gelsons, Creamy Boys, Slice & Pint, Empanada Shop, and more. Additionally, Tabula Rasa is donating more than 300 Becker’s cookies with 20% off coupons to their store, Dr Nina Desai is bringing skincare samples, and Happily Ever Laughter has donated entertainers for the more than 90 children expected to attend.

Also expected at the event are Monsignor Barry of American Martyrs Church, Mayor Amy Howorth and City Council member Joe Franklin, who will each say a few words to the families.

"It’s incredible what this team of women have been able to accomplish in the last 10 days," said Barbara.

Barbara is also collecting donations of new or gently used MBUSD gear (school sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc.) to share with incoming students. To donate items, email her at seden.lynne [at] hotmail.com.
